Ghana’s power transmission network suffered a major setback on Friday after a fire broke out at the Akosombo Substation, causing widespread disruption to electricity supply in parts of the country.

In a press statement issued by the Ghana Grid Company Limited on Thursday April 23rd,2026, the incident occurred at approximately 2:01 p.m., affecting operations and power generation.

The company confirmed that the outage has impacted several areas, though it did not immediately specify the regions most affected.

Emergency response teams were swiftly deployed to the scene and are working continuously to assess the damage and implement corrective measures.

GRIDCo noted that a full technical evaluation is underway to determine the extent of the impact and to guide restoration efforts.

“Our technical teams are actively working to manage the situation, stabilize the system, and minimize disruptions,” the statement said.

Authorities have assured the public that efforts are being intensified to restore normal power supply as quickly as possible. Residents are also being urged to remain calm while engineers work to resolve the issue.

The Ghana Grid Company Limited indicated that further updates will be communicated as more information becomes available.

The Akosombo Substation is a critical component of Ghana’s electricity transmission infrastructure, linking power generation sources to distribution networks nationwide.
