Volta Region: Man Jailed Seven Years for Stealing Church Instruments in Hohoe

Police said Rafiu was spotted by some members of the public carrying a sack filled with various items while hurriedly attempting to board a vehicle near the church. His suspicious behaviour prompted the witnesses to stop and inspect the contents of the sack.

A 27-year-old man, Mohammed Rafiu, has been convicted and sentenced by the Hohoe Circuit Court for unlawfully entering a church premises and stealing musical instruments belonging to the church.

According to a statement issued by the Volta North Regional Police Command on Tuesday June 9, 2026, the incident occurred on June 5, 2026, at Faith International Ministry Church in Hohoe in the Volta Region.

Police said Rafiu was spotted by some members of the public carrying a sack filled with various items while hurriedly attempting to board a vehicle near the church. His suspicious behaviour prompted the witnesses to stop and inspect the contents of the sack.

The inspection revealed several church instruments, including an amplifier, an equalizer, a mixer, and a crossover machine, all of which were identified as property of the church.

The suspect was subsequently arrested and handed over to the Hohoe District Police. During investigations, he admitted to the offences.

Rafiu was arraigned before the Hohoe Circuit Court on June 8, 2026, where he pleaded guilty to two counts of unlawful entry and stealing.

The court convicted him on his own plea and sentenced him to three years’ imprisonment for unlawful entry and four years for stealing. The sentences are to run concurrently, meaning he will serve a total of four years in prison.

The Volta North Regional Police Command has commended members of the public for their vigilance and urged citizens to promptly report any suspicious or criminal activities to the police to aid in crime prevention and law enforcement.
