Former Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam has raised pointed questions regarding President John Dramani Mahama’s assertion that the economy was “criminally mishandled” by the Akufo-Addo administration.
In a Facebook post, Adam challenged Mahama’s critique of the economic stewardship under his predecessor, particularly in light of recent pay raises for public sector workers.
Adam asked, “How could an economy described as ‘criminally mishandled’ afford to increase base pay for public sector workers by 30% in 2023, followed by 23% for the first half of 2024, and 25% for the latter half, all while maintaining decent fiscal deficits?”
He further questioned what had changed between December 2024 and February 2025 to put the economy in such a crisis that it could no longer support even a modest pay adjustment beyond 10%.
President Mahama has consistently criticised the economic management of the previous administration, claiming that the handling of national finances was reckless.
During a meeting with organised labour in Accra on February 20, Mr. Mahama remarked, “We know we are your natural allies, we have worked together for many years,” emphasizing his longstanding relationship with labor groups.
