The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Okudzeto Ablakwa has summoned the Acting High Commissioner of South Africa to Ghana, Thando Dalamba, over recent xenophobic incidents targeting foreign nationals, including Ghanaians, in South Africa.
According to a press release issued on Thursday April 23rd,2026, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, formally expressed the government’s deep concern about reported acts of intimidation and harassment captured in widely circulated videos.
The Minister cited a specific incident in KwaZulu-Natal, where a Ghanaian resident was reportedly confronted and asked to prove his legal status before being ordered to leave the country. He described such actions as violations of the dignity and rights of law-abiding individuals.
Government officials say follow-up reports indicate rising tensions, with some foreign nationals being advised to remain indoors for their safety.
While no fatalities or injuries have been confirmed in the latest incidents, authorities warn that similar past occurrences have led to loss of life and property.
Mr. Ablakwa also highlighted the longstanding ties between Ghana and South Africa, referencing Ghana’s historical support for the anti-apartheid struggle and the contributions of Kwame Nkrumah. He stressed that such attacks undermine African unity and solidarity.
The Government of Ghana has lodged a formal protest and called for immediate and effective measures to protect Ghanaian nationals. It also urged swift intervention by South African authorities to prevent further escalation and provide firm assurances that such incidents will not recur.
In response, Mr. Dalamba acknowledged the concerns raised and indicated that the South African government is actively monitoring the situation. He noted that law enforcement agencies are taking steps to restore calm, prevent violence, and ensure that individuals involved are held accountable.
The Foreign Affairs Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the welfare of Ghanaians abroad and pledged continued engagement with relevant authorities to ensure their safety and protection.
