Sam George, the Minister of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations, has announced a series of actions meant to improve the standard of telecommunications services in Ghana.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, April 9, the Minister recognised the public’s mounting discontent with mobile network providers’ performance.

“I have noted several complaints about the quality of service of almost all the network providers in the country,” he stated.

Sam George responded by declaring that he had given MTN Ghana technology neutrality and that the National Communications Authority (NCA) was permitted to provide more spectrum to MTN and Telecel Ghana.

“I have taken decisive policy to approve technology neutrality for MTN and additional spectrum for MTN Ghana. I have also directed the NCA to make an additional spectrum offer to Telecel Ghana,” he explained.

He claims that the action is meant to give telecom companies the resources they need to improve the quality of their services.

“This will provide operators with more resources to improve their service offerings and quality of services,” he noted.

Additionally, the Minister warned service providers that the NCA would keep a close eye on improvements and impose sanctions for non-compliance.

“I wish to serve notice that the NCA will, within three months of the assignment of this additional spectrum, begin a rigorous enforcement of quality of service on the providers. Failure to provide an improvement and quality of service by the network operators will result in stiff fines,” he cautioned.
