The government has successfully averted a nationwide strike by the Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG), following concerns about the recent appointment of Samuel Adom Botchway as the Registrar of the Births and Deaths Registry.
Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, announced on February 14, 2025, that Botchway would be reassigned from the position, easing tensions between the government and CLOGSAG.
The controversy erupted when CLOGSAG declared its intent to strike after Mr. Botchway, who was appointed on February 12, 2025, was seen as a politically exposed individual in a key civil service role.
In a meeting on February 11, CLOGSAG’s National Executive Council voiced concerns over the growing trend of appointing such individuals to critical government positions.
As a result, the association planned a nationwide strike, scheduled for February 20, 2025.
However, in a bid to resolve the standoff, Mr. Kwakye Ofosu confirmed that the government had addressed the issue, avoiding the strike. “In the truest spirit of cooperation and understanding, we are happy to announce that the matter has been resolved and there will be no nationwide strike by CLOGSAG,” he stated.
He emphasized the government’s commitment to being a responsive and collaborative administration. “The Government of President Mahama remains committed to being a listening one as we together reset our nation,” Mr.Ofosu concluded.
