President of the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA), Bessa Simons, has urged Ghanaians to take pride in their identity and cultural heritage, stating that the country’s distinct culture—from its food to fashion and music sets it apart on the global stage as the nation marks another milestone in celebrating its uniqueness.
Speaking at the Tobinco Media Group’s Heritage Launch on March 4, 2026, he emphasised that the month of March remains a significant period for national reflection, reminding citizens of their shared history and values. “Today is the day we remember ourselves. The good thing about Ghana is that every March, we remind ourselves of who we are, and that is what makes us unique,” he said.
Mr. Simons noted that Ghana’s identity is evident to anyone who crosses its borders, pointing to the country’s rich traditions and lifestyle. “When you cross our borders, you can clearly see how special Ghanaians are—from the food we eat to the way we dress and how we do our things. Everything about us is unique,” he added.
He further highlighted highlife music as a key symbol of Ghanaian heritage, stressing its cultural ownership and global significance. According to him, ongoing engagements between MUSIGA, the government, and the have affirmed highlife as a distinctly Ghanaian genre.
“Highlife music is for Ghanaians, and that also makes us unique. As we speak now, MUSIGA and the Ghanaian government have engaged UNESCO, and we have come to terms that highlife is proudly Ghanaian,” he stated.
Mr. Simons encouraged citizens to embrace self-belief and national pride, insisting that Ghana’s identity cannot be diminished. “Let us believe in ourselves as Ghanaians because we are so unique, and no one can take that away from us,” he urged.
