The United States Embassy in Accra has urged Ghanaians planning to attend the 2026 FIFA World Cup to strictly observe U.S. immigration laws, warning that overstaying visas will not be tolerated.

Speaking at a press briefing on Friday, February 20, Chargé d’Affaires Rolf Olson announced the opening of thousands of new visa appointment slots, including for those intending to travel to the tournament. He encouraged applicants to act quickly but underscored the responsibility that comes with being granted a visa.

“I’m going to be clear about this,” Mr. Olson said. “As of today, February 20, we have added tens of thousands of people to the World Cup, and indeed, we have lots of appointments available now. We’ve been putting out the message on social media, radio, and now I’m here today to help everyone hold that message.”

Acknowledging frustrations over long wait times, he said the Embassy had expanded staffing to ease the process. “Thanks to this surge in council personnel, we have the visitor visa plan available next week, and the week after, and the week after that. And everyone benefits from this increased visa plan availability,” he said.

Mr. Olson stressed, however, that a visa does not guarantee entry into the United States or determine the length of stay. “Every country has its immigration practices in place,” he said. “The visa itself is a permission to apply for entry at the border. When you get to the airport, it’s the customs border patrol officer who then officially gives you entry. It is that individual who will determine how long you have to stay.”

He explained that U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers make the final decision at the port of entry, and travelers are expected to depart before their authorized stay expires.

The Embassy emphasized that there will be no special visa procedures or expedited processes for World Cup applicants, noting that existing measures are sufficient. Those who have not yet booked appointments or who wish to reschedule to earlier dates were advised to act promptly, as capacity remains limited.

Reaffirming its commitment to working with the Government of Ghana, the Embassy said lawful travel is essential to maintaining future opportunities. “It’s really incumbent upon every visitor to respect the laws of the country they’re in,” Mr. Olson said.
