The Upper West Regional Police Command has arrested 34 suspects in connection with a deadly shooting incident linked to an ongoing chieftaincy dispute in Funsi in the Wa East District.
According to a press release issued by the Public Affairs Unit of the Ghana Police Service in the Upper West Region on Sunday May 24, 2026, the violence claimed the lives of three young men.
Police said the Funsi Police received information on the night of May 22 that two persons had been shot and killed at the Gbelonosi section of the community. Officers who rushed to the scene confirmed the deaths of 37-year-old Fufulu Nandugu and 22-year-old Yussif Samahan.
During subsequent police operations and investigations, a third victim, identified as 20-year-old Amadu Lukman, was also found dead in the community.
The statement indicated that a reinforcement team led by the Upper West Regional Commander, DCOP Francis Yiribaaré, visited the area to support investigations and maintain law and order.
Police revealed that several items were retrieved during the operation, including a shotgun, bow and arrows, gunpowder, spent cartridges, talisman-embedded smocks and a medallion believed to be central to the chieftaincy tensions between rival gates.
All suspects and exhibits have since been conveyed to Wa to assist with further investigations.
The Police Administration expressed condolences to the bereaved families and assured the public of its commitment to bringing all those responsible to justice.
The Regional Police Command also appealed to residents and stakeholders to remain calm, avoid reprisals and cooperate with security agencies by providing credible information to support investigations.
Meanwhile, intensified patrols and additional security measures have been deployed in the community to maintain peace and security.
