The Parliament of Ghana has confirmed the detention of the Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, Kwame Ohene Frimpong, at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
The development was announced in an official statement released by Parliament on Tuesday following reports that the lawmaker had been detained by authorities in the European country.
According to the statement, Parliament has formally taken notice of the incident and is currently working through diplomatic channels to obtain full details surrounding the matter.
“It has come to the attention of Parliament that the Hon Member for Asante Akyem North Constituency, Mr Kwame Ohene Frimpong has been detained at the Schipol Airport, Amsterdam in the Netherlands,” the statement said.
Parliament further disclosed that the Speaker of Parliament together with the leadership of the House are actively engaging Ghana’s diplomatic mission in The Hague to gather detailed information about the circumstances leading to the detention.
“The Rt Hon Speaker and the Leadership of the House are in touch with Ghana’s Mission in The Hague for detailed information on the matter. The public will be duly informed appropriately on this matter,” the statement added.
As of the time of filing this report, authorities have not publicly disclosed the reason for the detention of the legislator, and there has been no official communication from Dutch authorities regarding possible charges or investigations.
The incident has since sparked public discussion on social media, with many Ghanaians awaiting further clarification from both Parliament and Ghana’s diplomatic representatives in the Netherlands.
Schiphol Airport, one of Europe’s busiest international airports, serves as a major transit hub for international travelers entering and leaving the Netherlands.
Detentions at the airport are typically handled by Dutch immigration, customs, or security authorities depending on the nature of the issue involved.
Political observers say Parliament’s swift acknowledgment of the situation and engagement with Ghana’s Mission in The Hague suggests efforts are underway to ensure the rights and welfare of the MP are protected while authorities ascertain the facts surrounding the incident.
Meanwhile, constituents in Asante Akyem North and members of the public continue to await official updates on the matter, as Parliament has assured that further information will be communicated when available.
