The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first and only public sector institution in Ghana to secure certification in three internationally recognized International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standards in a single assessment process.

The Authority announced that it has successfully attained certification in ISO 9001 for Quality Management Systems (QMS), ISO 14001 for Environmental Management Systems (EMS), and ISO 45001 for Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems (OHSMS).

The certifications were awarded by SGS, a globally recognized inspection, verification, testing and certification company, following a rigorous evaluation of the NPA’s operational systems and management processes.

According to the Authority, the achievement underscores its commitment to excellence, environmental sustainability, and workplace health and safety in the regulation of Ghana’s downstream petroleum industry.

The ISO 9001 certification recognizes organizations that consistently provide products and services that meet customer and regulatory requirements while enhancing customer satisfaction.

ISO 14001 focuses on effective environmental management practices, while ISO 45001 demonstrates an organization’s commitment to ensuring safe and healthy working conditions for employees and stakeholders.

The NPA said the triple certification reflects years of institutional reforms aimed at improving efficiency, accountability, and service delivery within the petroleum sector.

Industry observers have described the accomplishment as a major step in strengthening public confidence in the Authority’s operations and reinforcing Ghana’s commitment to international best practices in public sector governance.

Background

Established under the National Petroleum Authority Act, 2005 (Act 691), the NPA is the statutory body responsible for regulating, overseeing and monitoring activities in Ghana’s downstream petroleum industry. The Authority ensures fair competition, consumer protection, and the efficient distribution of petroleum products across the country.

Over the years, the NPA has implemented several digital and regulatory reforms to improve transparency and operational efficiency within the sector.

These include initiatives to monitor fuel quality, track petroleum product movements, and strengthen compliance among industry players.

The latest ISO certifications add to the Authority’s efforts to position itself as a modern regulator aligned with international standards, while promoting environmental stewardship and occupational safety within Ghana’s petroleum industry.
