Personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) have prevented what could have been a major disaster after successfully containing a fire outbreak at a mini supermarket in Amenam in the Birim North Municipality of the Eastern Region.

According to a statement on Monday June 15, 2026, firefighters from the New Abirem Municipal Fire Station responded swiftly to a distress call in the early hours of Saturday, June 13, 2026, after a fire broke out at a supermarket located near a clinic in Amenam.

A five-member firefighting crew led by Assistant Divisional Officer (ADO II) Annor Fobih Romeo arrived at the scene to find the supermarket engulfed in flames. The team immediately launched a coordinated firefighting operation, bringing the blaze under control and preventing it from spreading to nearby buildings and properties.

Although no injuries or fatalities were recorded, the fire completely destroyed the supermarket and its contents. Items lost in the blaze included deep freezers, gas cylinders, provisions, vegetables, cooking utensils, and 75 tubers of yam.

The GNFS estimated the value of the destroyed goods at approximately GH¢80,000.

Fire officials noted that their prompt intervention helped avert a larger catastrophe that could have affected surrounding structures and caused more extensive losses.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
