Former Chief of Defence Staff, Joseph Nunoo-Mensah, has underscored the importance of honesty and accountability in sustaining democratic governance, stating that democracy can only succeed when it is practiced in its true spirit.
Speaking in an interview on Atinka TV’s Ghana Nie Morning Show, he said democracy remains one of the best systems of governance, but its success depends largely on the integrity of both leaders and citizens.
“Democracy is very good if well practiced,” he stated.
He further stressed that the effectiveness of democratic governance is closely tied to honesty and transparency, warning that the system can only deliver its intended benefits when people are truthful and act in the national interest.
“Democracy is good only when people are honest with themselves,” he added.
According to the retired military officer, democratic institutions can function effectively only when citizens uphold principles of accountability, fairness, and responsibility.
His comments come amid ongoing discussions about governance, leadership, and the strengthening of democratic institutions in Ghana.
Brigadier General (Rtd.) Nunoo-Mensah’s remarks highlight the critical role that integrity and civic responsibility play in ensuring that democracy contributes meaningfully to national development and social progress.
