A 33-year-old woman accused of stealing a newborn from Mamprobi Polyclinic has been remanded into police custody for two weeks, authorities said Friday.

Latifa Iddrisu, a cloth seller in Accra, is charged in connection with the alleged theft of a baby on Feb. 18. She is scheduled to reappear in court on March 4.

Police said Iddrisu disguised herself as a nurse and was captured on the clinic’s surveillance cameras carrying the infant out of the facility in what appeared to be a sack. The footage later circulated widely on social media, sparking alarm among staff and patients.

The baby’s mother had delivered by cesarean section the previous day.

Iddrisu was arrested hours later at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, where police found her with the child. She was transferred to Mamprobi Polyclinic under the Dansoman Divisional Police Command for questioning.

Investigators said the baby’s mother identified her child by a distinctive birthmark on the left leg. The infant was reunited with the family, bringing relief after the ordeal.
