The National Petroleum Authority has stepped up its nationwide consumer education and petroleum safety campaign with a series of public sensitisation programmes held across communities in the Volta and Ashanti Regions.

The exercise, organised by the Authority’s Consumer Services Directorate, targeted markets, transport terminals, women groups and tertiary institutions, with a focus on promoting safe fuel handling practices and protecting consumers from petroleum-related risks.

According to the NPA, the campaign covered key issues including petroleum safety practices, fuel quality assurance, proper Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) handling, consumer rights, complaint reporting procedures and the dangers of siphoning fuel from accident scenes involving Bulk Road Vehicles.

Speaking during the engagements, the Director of Consumer Services at the NPA, Eunice Budu-Nyarko, urged motorists and fuel consumers to be vigilant when purchasing fuel.

She advised consumers to always confirm the type of fuel being dispensed, carefully monitor dispenser screens and demand receipts after every transaction to avoid being cheated.

In the Volta Region, the sensitisation team engaged traders and commuters at the Ho Market and Lorry Park, while also visiting Ho Technical University, Ho Nursing Training College and women groups in Hohoe.

The Ashanti Regional leg of the campaign took the team to Bantama Market as well as Kumasi Technical University, Fomena Nursing Training College and Tepa Nursing and Midwifery Training College Anyinasuo Campus.

Technical presentations during the campaign were delivered by Ing. Johnson Gbagbo Jnr, Head of Consumer Data Analytics and Market Intelligence, and Maureen Adwoa Duori, Head of Consumer Education and Stakeholder Engagement, with support from NPA regional managers and staff.

The Authority says the exercise forms part of ongoing efforts to deepen public awareness on petroleum safety and ensure consumers are well-informed about their rights and responsibilities within the downstream petroleum sector.
