Interior Minister Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak has assured Ghanaians that the country’s newly introduced e-visa system will not compromise national security, insisting that the digital platform is designed to strengthen border control while improving efficiency for travellers and investors.
Speaking at the official launch of Ghana’s e-visa portal at the Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City in Accra on Monday May 25,2026, Mr Muntaka described the initiative as a major milestone in the country’s efforts to modernise its immigration and security architecture.
According to him, the introduction of the online visa application system reflects the growing need for countries to adopt efficient and technology-driven systems that facilitate travel, trade and investment without weakening national protection measures.
“Nations do not compete only with resources. They compete with systems. They compete with efficiency,” the Interior Minister stated.
He explained that the new platform is expected to significantly reduce delays and uncertainty associated with traditional visa application processes, which often required applicants to physically visit embassies or consulates.
“This platform does something powerful. It removes barriers. No more unnecessary delays. No more uncertainty,” he said.
“Instead, we offer speed, convenience and confidence.”
Under the new arrangement, travellers from around the world can apply for Ghanaian visas entirely online, eliminating long queues and cumbersome paperwork while improving accessibility for international visitors.
Mr Muntaka said the move demonstrates Ghana’s commitment to positioning itself as an attractive destination for tourism, investment and international partnerships.
“We are telling the world that Ghana is open for business. Ghana is ready for tourism. Ghana is ready for global partnerships,” he noted.
The Interior Minister, however, stressed that making entry into Ghana easier does not mean compromising the safety of citizens or weakening border security.
“Openness does not mean weakness. We are not only opening our doors; we are strengthening them,” he assured.
According to him, one of the key advantages of the e-visa system is its ability to allow security agencies to assess and screen travellers before they arrive in the country.
He explained that the digital process provides immigration and security authorities with advance information on visitors, enabling them to identify potential threats early and take preventive action where necessary.
“Before a traveller even boards a plane, we already know who is coming. We assess risks early, identify threats early, and act early. This is modern border control,” he said.
“That is responsible leadership, and that is how we protect our people while still welcoming the world.”
Mr Muntaka further indicated that the adoption of technology in visa processing aligns with global best practices in border management and national security.
He noted that many countries around the world are increasingly relying on digital systems to improve migration management, enhance data collection and strengthen surveillance capabilities.
The Interior Minister said Ghana’s e-visa initiative would help improve coordination among security agencies while also boosting confidence among investors and international travellers seeking to enter the country.
He added that the government remains committed to balancing openness with vigilance to ensure that Ghana continues to maintain a secure and welcoming environment.
The e-visa platform officially went live on Africa Day as part of broader efforts to modernise Ghana’s immigration system and improve service delivery within the travel and hospitality sectors.
