The Ghana Standards Authority has arrested two Chinese nationals and shut down a mattress and furniture manufacturing company near Dawhenya in the Greater Accra Region over the alleged use of substandard materials in production.

The operation forms part of an ongoing nationwide exercise by the Authority to clamp down on factories and companies producing goods that fail to meet approved standards.

According to the GSA, the operation by its Greater Accra Regional Office followed intelligence indicating that some manufacturing companies previously closed down for non-compliance with standards certification were still secretly operating.

During the exercise, officials visited 5A Homes, a furniture and mattress manufacturing company near Dawhenya, where two managers of the company were arrested to assist with investigations.

Preliminary findings reportedly revealed that the company was still producing mattresses using substandard materials despite previous regulatory concerns.

Speaking to the media after the operation, the Greater Accra Regional Manager of the GSA, Clement Kubati, expressed concern about the activities of some manufacturers producing inferior products for the Ghanaian market.

The enforcement team later proceeded to the China Mall in Ashaiman, where officials confiscated several allegedly substandard mattresses and electrical bulbs linked to the affected manufacturing companies operating within the Dawhenya enclave.

Mr. Kubati stated that the low-quality products discovered on the market posed risks to consumers and misled unsuspecting buyers.

The Ghana Standards Authority also disclosed plans to pursue legal action against individuals and managers found culpable, including the imposition of fines and other sanctions under the law.

The Authority reiterated its commitment to protecting consumers and ensuring that products manufactured and sold in Ghana meet approved safety and quality standards.
