The Ashanti Regional Secretariat of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) has demanded the immediate bail of a teacher at Nyinahin Catholic Senior High School who was arrested following an altercation with a final-year student.

In a press release dated June 9, 2026, GNAT expressed concern over the continued detention of the teacher, who also serves as a hostel caretaker at the school in the Atwima Mponua District.

The teacher was arrested after a viral incident involving a female student, which has attracted widespread public attention and prompted investigations by both the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Education Service (GES).

GNAT said it is dissatisfied with the manner in which the case is being handled and called on the Atwima Mponua Police Command to grant bail to the teacher without delay.

“We call on the Ghana Police Service, Atwima Mponua Command, to grant bail to the teacher immediately,” the statement said.

The association also urged all relevant stakeholders, including the GES and school authorities, to ensure that due process is followed in addressing the matter.

GNAT warned that failure to grant the teacher bail by June 10 would trigger industrial action across the district.

According to the association, teachers at Nyinahin Catholic SHS and other schools in the Atwima Mponua District would be directed to boycott the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

The association further announced plans for teachers to wear red armbands and embark on a demonstration to protest what it described as the authorities’ handling of the case.

“Should the teacher not be granted bail by tomorrow, GNAT Ashanti Region will be compelled to direct teachers of Nyinahin Catholic SHS and all teachers in the district to boycott the ongoing WASSCE examinations,” the statement noted.

GNAT maintained that while it remains committed to promoting discipline in schools, it also has a responsibility to protect the welfare and rights of teachers.

The statement was signed by the Ashanti Regional Secretary of GNAT, D.K. Atakora, who called on authorities to act swiftly to prevent further escalation of the matter.
