Ghana’s deepening electricity shortages have prompted sweeping leadership changes across the energy sector, underscoring the government’s urgency in tackling the return of “dumsor.”

On Sunday, Energy and Green Transition Minister John Jinapor directed the Chief Executive Officer of Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) to step aside pending investigations into a fire at the Akosombo power control center. The incident, which disrupted transmission operations, is believed to have worsened the nationwide outages.

GRIDCo, the state‑owned operator responsible for transmitting electricity, is central to stabilizing supply. Any disruption at its control centers has immediate and far‑reaching consequences for households and businesses.

At the same time, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) announced a leadership reshuffle in its Ashanti Region operations. While details remain limited, the decision is widely interpreted as part of broader efforts to address inefficiencies in distribution a critical pressure point in Ghana’s electricity value chain.

The twin actions highlight the government’s push to restore accountability and shore up confidence as power cuts intensify. Once thought to be behind Ghana, dumsor has resurfaced with increasing frequency, disrupting economic activity and eroding public trust.

Jinapor is scheduled to brief the nation at 2 p.m. on Monday April 27th, to outline measures to stabilize supply and strengthen oversight. For now, businesses and households remain on edge, awaiting clarity on how quickly the government can deliver relief.
