UK-based Ghanaian surgeon, Dr. George Brown, has raised concerns over the state of oral healthcare in Ghana, describing dentistry as one of the most neglected sectors within the country’s healthcare system.
Speaking during a discussion on Bullet TV’s Morning Target, Dr. Brown stated that dentistry continues to receive inadequate attention despite the increasing oral health challenges facing many Ghanaians.
“Dentistry remains the Cinderella service of healthcare in Ghana — overlooked,” he remarked.
According to him, there is an urgent need for greater investment in oral healthcare infrastructure, public education, and professional training to address the growing crisis.
Dr. Brown stressed that Ghana requires more dental professionals to improve access to oral healthcare services across the country.
“We need more dentists to tackle Ghana’s growing oral health crisis,” he stated.
He also advised the public to adopt proper oral hygiene practices, cautioning against aggressive brushing habits that can damage teeth and gums.
“Be gentle when brushing your teeth; it is called ‘tooth brushing,’ not tooth scrubbing,” he advised.
The surgeon further encouraged regular dental check-ups and increased public awareness on oral health, noting that many dental conditions can be prevented through proper hygiene and early treatment.
