All sorts of peddling, trading, and other unlawful activity under the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange must stop immediately, according to Accra Mayor Michael Kpakpo Allotey, who has warned that violators will be detained and punished.

During a working visit to the Okaikoi South Sub-Metropolitan District on Tuesday, June 16, the Mayor led a team from the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) to examine sanitary issues, building permit compliance and Assembly by-law enforcement.

AMA personnel removed food vendors, beggars, and individuals sleeping beneath the Korle Klottey area of the interchange as part of the operation. Makeshift buildings and other illegal activities that had taken over portions of the region were also targeted by the operation.

The Mayor emphasised to locals and vendors that the area underneath the interchange was not intended for any unauthorised use, including camping, food vending, or commercial activity.

Addressing residents and traders, Mayor Allotey stressed that the area beneath the interchange was never intended for commercial activities, camping, or informal settlements.

“The Assembly will no longer tolerate the use of the area under the interchange for trading or other illegal activities. Anyone found engaging in such activities will be dealt with according to the law,” he warned.

The exercise forms part of the AMA’s broader efforts to improve sanitation, restore order in public spaces, and ensure strict enforcement of city by-laws across the capital.

The Mayor claims that the enforcement action is a component of the AMA’s larger initiatives to enhance public safety, restore order, and promote sanitation in the nation’s capital.

Along the Otublohum Road shoulder, next to the Circle VIP Station, unauthorised wooden structures were also dismantled by the inspection crew.

According to Mr Allotey, these kinds of structures lead to traffic jams, unsanitary conditions, and the blocking of public areas.

He also threatened to punish owners of drinking establishments, VIP Station managers, and cattle owners who operate along Otublohum Road if they did not clean and desilt clogged gutters within a day.
