The MP for Asutifi North, Ebenezer Kwaku Addo, says he only stepped in to calm tensions during a clash between residents of Hwidiem and the National Anti-Illegal Mining task force.

He explained that he was on his way to a funeral when he heard about the trouble and went there after speaking with the Asutifi South MP, Hon. Collins Dauda.

Mr. Addo said he spoke with the security officers and called the Hwidiem Zongo Chief to help restore peace. He said his goal was only to prevent violence, not to interfere.

Police, however, claim the MP arrived with a group that freed some arrested miners and attacked the task force.

Some vehicles and parts of the police station were damaged during the chaos.
