The Awutu Senya East Constituency Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Stephen Ofosu Agyare, has indicated his intention to contest in the party’s upcoming parliamentary primaries, a move that has stirred discussion within local party circles.
Speaking at a recent ward meeting in Opeikuma, Mr. Agyare said his decision was motivated by a desire to advance development in the constituency, with a particular focus on job creation and youth empowerment.
His announcement has, however, generated mixed reactions among party members. While some supporters view his decision as a healthy expression of internal democracy, others fear it could deepen existing divisions within the constituency, given his previously strained relationship with the incumbent Member of Parliament, Hon. Philis Naa Koryoo Okunnor.
During the 2023 NDC parliamentary primaries, Mr. Agyare was reported to have supported a rival candidate, though Hon. Okunnor eventually won by a significant margin. Efforts by senior party figures, including former President John Dramani Mahama, to foster unity within the constituency have been ongoing.
Political analysts suggest that the development may test the party’s internal cohesion as it prepares for the 2028 general elections.
