As Ghana joined the global celebration of World Egg Day, local poultry farmers took the opportunity to raise concerns about a worrying decline in egg consumption nationwide — a trend they say is threatening livelihoods and increasing unemployment in the poultry sector.

At a training seminar organized by Sky Agro and Aquaculture Solutions Limited, farmers called on the government to reinstate the “Egg Day in SHS” initiative, which previously saw eggs incorporated into meals served to Senior High School (SHS) students across the country.

The farmers highlighted the nutritional and economic benefits of eggs, describing them as an affordable source of high-quality protein and essential nutrients necessary for the growth and development of young people.

They argued that increased egg consumption among students would not only enhance their health and academic performance but also provide a stable market for local producers.

The CEO of Sky Agro and Aquaculture Solutions, Alfred Kwame Agbotsise, explained that the seminar was part of a nationwide series of free training sessions aimed at empowering poultry farmers with the skills and knowledge needed to sustain and grow their operations.

Industry players believe that with the right support, Ghana’s poultry sector can contribute significantly to job creation, food security, and economic growth.
