The spotlight shone brightly on the Ghanaian dance scene at the 2nd edition of the Ghana Dance Industry (GHADI) Awards, which took place on Saturday, February 8, 2025, at the National Theatre.
The star-studded event celebrated the country’s finest dance talents, with the night’s biggest accolades going to some of the industry’s most influential figures.
Dancegod Lloyd Takes the Crown
In a highly competitive Dancer of the Year category, Dancegod Lloyd emerged victorious, securing the coveted title amidst stiff competition from names like Incredible Zigi, AfroNitaaa, Endurance Grand, Ezuntey Flex, and Bboy Lyricx. The win sparked some online debates leading up to the event, but in the end, Dancegod’s dedication and immense contributions to the dance world saw him claim the ultimate prize.
DWP Academy Dominates Street Dance Scene
The renowned DWP Academy walked away with the Street Dance Group of the Year award, beating out other talented nominees such as Millitantz Dance Family, 4Bent Dance Crew, and Arenees Dance Crew. The academy’s innovative performances and commitment to pushing boundaries were recognized, marking yet another high point in its storied career.
Afronitaaa and Abigail Recognized as Dance Culture Ambassadors
Afronitaaa and Abigail both received Dance Merit Awards for their outstanding contributions as Street Dance Culture Ambassadors, further solidifying their roles as pivotal figures in the dance community. Their work continues to inspire countless dancers, and the recognition was a testament to their tireless advocacy and passion for the craft.
More Awards, More Triumphs
Other notable wins included Team Hubes, who were named Dance Athletes of the Year (Group), and Afrikiko Leisure Centre, which took home AfroLatin Dance Club of the Year. Agoo Cultural Group claimed the award for Traditional Dance Group of the Year, while Let’s Dance Africa won Praise Dance Group of the Year.
Iconic Dance Figures Honored
The ceremony also honored 22 dance icons who have made significant contributions to the industry. Among the honorees were AfroNitaaa, Mr. Drew, Laladzy, Abigail, and Allo Maadjoa, whose work has inspired a new generation of dancers. International figures, including Buddy Doubara Agedah (Nigerian Afrolatin Dance Festival organizer) and Prince “MIK” Ofori (CDC festival organizer in Germany), were also recognized for their global impact on the dance community.
Celebrating Dance Excellence
Roberk Klah, CEO of Dancetera and founder of the Ghana Dance Industry Awards, spoke passionately about the importance of recognizing dancers not just locally, but on a global scale. “Our dancers are not just the best in Ghana or Africa; they are among the best in the world,” he said. “They deserve to be celebrated for both their local and global achievements.”
A Night of Dance, Glamour, and Support
The event was a dazzling showcase of dance talent, with performances from NOYAM, UADT, Arenees, Black Illusion, Militantz, and more. The glamorous red carpet was hosted by Xclusizive Zake and Essilfua Boris, while Jay Foley and Chrystal Kwame-Aryee took charge of the awards ceremony. DJ Alinko provided the musical backdrop for the evening.
In attendance were several prominent figures, including lecturers from the School of Performing Arts at the University of Ghana, such as Terry Bright Ofosu (1989 National Dance Champion), Dr. Artistedes Hargoe, and dance legends like Adjetey Sowah, Lumo Bortei Doku, and Nana Gazur.
Hon. Dzifa Abla Gomashie, Minister for Tourism, Culture & Creative Arts, commended the event and expressed her unwavering support for the dance community. However, she also voiced her disappointment at the absence of some industry stakeholders, urging musicians and fashion icons to show more support for the dance world.
The 2025 Ghana Dance Industry Awards was a collaborative effort with the Dancers & DanceSport Association of Ghana, Rhythms Africa, Charterhouse, and media partners, and was broadcast live on GBC’s Lifestyle TV.
