A commercial shop at Asokwa in Kumasi was completely destroyed by fire on Sunday evening, June 14, 2026, but the swift intervention of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) prevented the blaze from spreading to nearby structures.
According to the GNFS, the fire occurred at Eddy Kay Collection Shop, located near the Unity Oil Filling Station in Asokwa. The Service received a distress call at approximately 7:54 p.m. and immediately dispatched a firefighting team from the Regional Headquarters Substation.
The crew, led by Station Officer I Augustine Adogoba, arrived at the scene at 8:06 p.m. to find the shop engulfed in flames. Firefighters managed to bring the situation under control within 15 minutes and fully extinguished the fire by 8:52 p.m.
Although the shop and its contents were completely destroyed, fire officers successfully prevented the flames from spreading to adjoining commercial and residential properties, averting what could have become a major disaster in the area.
The GNFS confirmed that no injuries or fatalities were recorded in the incident.
Officials have launched investigations to determine the cause of the fire.
The Municipal Chief Executive for Asokwa, Hon. Kamel Amo, was present at the scene to assess the situation and provide support to the firefighting team despite the challenging rainy conditions.
In a statement issued on Monday June 15, 2026, the Fire Service commended the professionalism and rapid response of its personnel, highlighting their role in protecting lives and property.
The Service also urged the public to exercise caution in the use of electricity and electrical appliances, particularly during the rainy season, to help prevent fires caused by electrical faults.
The incident adds to growing concerns over fire outbreaks in commercial areas, with authorities continuing to stress the importance of fire safety measures and regular electrical maintenance.
