A midwife at Ridge Hospital, Mrs Racheal Hesse Matey, has called for greater awareness of maternal mental health, warning that psychological challenges during pregnancy should never be ignored as they can have lasting effects after childbirth.
Speaking on Atinka TV’s Ghana Nie Lifestyle segment, hosted by Ama Gyenfa Ofosu Darkwah, Mrs. Matey stressed that the emotional and mental well-being of expectant mothers is just as important as their physical health.
She cautioned that untreated mental health challenges during pregnancy can negatively affect a mother’s well-being after delivery, emphasising the need for early identification, family support, and appropriate medical care.
“Ignoring mental health challenges during pregnancy can affect a mother after childbirth,” she stated.
Mrs. Matey also advised pregnant women to seek immediate medical attention if they experience any form of bleeding during pregnancy, noting that bleeding is not a normal occurrence and could signal serious complications requiring urgent intervention.
“Bleeding during pregnancy is not normal; seek medical attention immediately,” she urged.
She further highlighted the important role of family support during labour, explaining that the presence of a husband or birth partner can significantly reduce anxiety and stress experienced by women during childbirth.
“The presence of a husband during childbirth often helps reduce anxiety and stress,” she noted.
Mrs. Matey encouraged expectant mothers to attend regular antenatal clinics, openly discuss any physical or emotional concerns with healthcare professionals, and seek timely medical care to ensure safe pregnancies and healthy outcomes for both mother and child.
Her remarks reinforce the growing recognition of holistic maternal healthcare, which integrates physical, emotional, and psychological support throughout pregnancy and childbirth.
