The Ministry of Health, Ghana, has confirmed the payment of outstanding arrears to newly recruited nurses while outlining plans to significantly expand recruitment within the health sector.
In a statement issued on April 28, 2026, the Ministry said two months’ arrears owed to the nurses have been fully paid, in line with its earlier commitment. It added that the next round of payments—covering three months from May to July—will be processed as previously scheduled.
Recruitment Drive Underway
The Ministry also disclosed that it is preparing to recruit up to 16,000 health workers this year as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s healthcare system.
So far, financial clearance has been secured for about 8,000 positions, with ongoing efforts to obtain approval for the remaining slots. Authorities stressed that no recruitment will take place without the necessary financial backing.
The recruitment is expected to span various health professional categories to support the gradual absorption of trained personnel into the system.
Portal Challenges Acknowledged
Officials reiterated that the official recruitment portal remains the only authorised channel for applications, emphasising its role in ensuring transparency and fairness in the process.
However, the Ministry acknowledged that some applicants have faced difficulties accessing the portal due to high traffic volumes, leading to concerns among prospective candidates.
It assured the public that steps are being taken to address these challenges and secure additional recruitment clearances to accommodate more qualified applicants.

The Ministry expressed appreciation for the patience and cooperation of stakeholders, reaffirming its commitment to improving healthcare delivery through workforce expansion.
