The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission has withdrawn a directive that barred public universities from engaging retired academic staff, following instructions from the Ministry of Education.
Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu ordered the immediate reversal after meeting with leaders of the University Teachers Association of Ghana. The directive, issued Oct. 1, 2025, had restricted post-retirement contracts for senior academic members.
In a statement Monday, GTEC said the withdrawal takes effect immediately, pending consultations with stakeholders to build consensus and ensure institutional sustainability.
A letter dated April 27, 2026, signed by Deputy Director-General Prof. Augustine Ocloo on behalf of the Director-General, confirmed the reversal and noted that further guidance will be issued after consultations conclude.
