Ghana’s Minister of Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has described the ongoing nationwide power system upgrade by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) as unprecedented.

The project, valued at approximately GH¢1.8 billion, is aimed at improving electricity distribution and ensuring a more stable power supply across the country.

Speaking during a working visit to the ECG Nungua District Office at Lashibi in the Tema Region, the Minister noted that although the current investment is lower than the estimated GH¢9 billion spent under the previous administration, it is expected to deliver significant impact.

He explained that the initiative goes beyond replacing faulty and obsolete transformers and includes upgrading existing equipment to higher-capacity voltage systems to improve efficiency and reliability.

The visit, which included officials from the Energy Commission and ECG, forms part of ongoing efforts to assess the progress of the nationwide upgrade project.

The exercise began in the Greater Accra Region, where substantial investments have been made in replacing aging and outdated distribution transformers.

In the Tema Region alone, about GH¢13 million has been invested in transformer upgrades. Notably, the Lashibi power station has seen the replacement of a 50 MVA transformer with a higher-capacity 60 MVA unit, expected to improve electricity supply to more than 120,000 customers in the Nungua District and surrounding areas.

Minister Jinapor expressed satisfaction with the progress of work, noting that the investment is part of broader government measures to ensure a reliable and stable power supply nationwide.

Providing further details, Tema Regional Manager of ECG, Emmanuel Ankomah, said additional distribution transformers will be installed across several communities to boost supply. He also indicated that the company is strengthening its fault reporting centres to improve response times.

According to the Ministry of Energy, the next phase of the upgrade will extend to the Ashanti Region and later the Volta Region, where aging low-voltage infrastructure is set to be replaced.
