The Ghana Police Service in Accra has intensified a manhunt for suspects who opened fire during a violent clash at the Adjen Kotoku Onion Market in the Amasaman area, as authorities move to bring those responsible to justice.
The shooting, which occurred on April 6, 2026, disrupted trading activities and sparked fear among traders and residents at the busy Adjen Kotoku enclave. Investigators say the violence stemmed from longstanding tensions among five onion traders’ associations operating within the market.
According to a press release dated April 7, the dispute centred on disagreements over the distribution of onion supplies brought in by foreign traders. What began as a disagreement quickly escalated into a confrontation, culminating in gunshots fired by unidentified individuals.
Police say the suspects fled the scene before officers arrived, prompting an ongoing operation to track them down. The Accra Regional Police Command has since deployed additional personnel to the area, with heightened patrols aimed at deterring further unrest.
Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs for the region, confirmed that security has been reinforced at the market and surrounding communities. She noted that police have also engaged leaders of the five trader groups, who have pledged to maintain calm as investigations continue.
Authorities have warned that individuals found to own illegal firearms or involved in acts of violence will face the full rigours of the law. The police have also urged the public to volunteer credible information that could assist in the arrest of the suspects.
Despite the incident, calm has been restored at the market, with a visible police presence maintained to ensure the safety of traders and prevent any recurrence.
