The Member of Parliament for Madina, Hon. Dr. Francis Xavier-Sosu, has praised President John Dramani Mahama following the United Nations’ approval of a motion on reparations for the transatlantic slave trade.

In a social media post, Dr. Sosu described the achievement as a “global impact and legacy,” adding that Africa would remain grateful for the President’s leadership.

The United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, adopted the motion led by Ghana, with 123 member states voting in favour. The resolution calls for renewed global commitment to reparatory justice for African countries and descendants of enslaved people.

It also urges countries to begin structured discussions and take practical steps to address the lasting effects of slavery on African societies.

Three countries—the United States, Argentina, and Israel—voted against the motion, while 52 others abstained. The United States said it could not support the resolution due to concerns about who would benefit from the reparations.

Despite this, the motion has been widely seen as a major step in the global push to address the impact of the transatlantic slave trade.

Dr. Sosu’s remarks add to growing praise for President Mahama’s leadership in pushing the issue onto the international stage.
