Twelve Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) personnel were injured Tuesday when a petrol tanker exploded at Gomoa Potsin.

In a press release dated March 17, the tanker, carrying about 54,000 litres of petrol, caught fire early morning. GNFS said crews faced “a fully developed fire” that was “rapidly spreading to nearby properties,” but the driver and mate “escaped unhurt.”

The blaze was controlled by 0758 hours, but during cooling operations, it reignited and exploded, “resulting in injuries to twelve (12) firefighters.”

Four were seriously hurt; three were taken to Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital and one to Potsin Polyclinic. GNFS confirmed “all the severely injured firefighters have since been treated and discharged.”

Central Regional Commander ACFO I Merinder Mary Attigah Mensah and DCFO Roberta Aggrey Ghanson visited the injured and assured them of “Management’s commitment to their welfare and full recovery.”

The Service added that the cause “remains under investigation” and continues to oversee the “safe transfer of the remaining petrol.”
