French football star Kylian Mbappé has called for strict disciplinary action against Argentine youngster Gianluca Prestianni following allegations of racist abuse directed at Vinícius Júnior during a heated encounter involving SL Benfica.
According to Mbappé, Prestianni repeatedly used a racial slur during the match, claiming the word “monkey” was uttered five times and was heard by several Benfica players on the pitch.
“He said ‘monkey’ five times… Benfica players heard it,” Mbappé alleged, describing the incident as unacceptable and calling for decisive action.
The accusation has sparked widespread outrage and renewed scrutiny over racism in European football. Vinícius Júnior, who has previously been subjected to racist abuse in Spain, has become one of the most outspoken figures in the fight against discrimination in the sport, frequently urging authorities to move beyond symbolic gestures.
Football authorities are now under increasing pressure to launch a formal investigation into the alleged incident. Calls are also mounting for a possible suspension should the claims be substantiated, as players, fans, and anti-racism groups demand stronger enforcement of existing rules.
The controversy once again highlights the persistent challenge of racism in football, with many arguing that only firm sanctions and consistent accountability will help curb discriminatory behaviour across the game.
