The New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ghana’s governing political organization, has declared itself fully prepared for its presidential primaries, scheduled for Saturday, January 31, 2026. Party officials say the vote will be conducted under heightened security and with strict measures to ensure transparency.

Joseph Osei-Owusu, chair of the NPP Presidential Elections Committee, told the Ghana News Agency on Tuesday that 211,849 delegates are eligible to participate. Voting will take place at 333 polling centers across 276 constituencies, with additional stations created in districts where delegate numbers exceed 1,000.

“Everything that has to be done is done. The Commission is ready, the police are ready, and everything they need to be able to do their work has been provided,” Mr. Osei-Owusu said.

The polls are set to open at 7 a.m. and close at 2 p.m., and will be administered entirely by the Electoral Commission. In a bid to strengthen credibility, the committee has abolished proxy voting.

Security arrangements are extensive. Between 70 and 150 police officers will be deployed at each center, with military support in sensitive areas, particularly in the Upper East Region.

The final register of voters was compiled after a validation process that removed 2,827 deceased members and 653 individuals who had forfeited their party membership. Agents representing all five aspirants, former Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Bryan Acheampong, and Yaw Osei Adutwum, took part in verifying the IT data underpinning the exercise.

Mr. Osei-Owusu expressed confidence that the primaries would be conducted fairly, underscoring the party’s commitment to “transparency, efficiency, and security” as it prepares to select its flagbearer for the 2026 general elections.
