A devastating fire has destroyed more than 50 shops located behind the VVIP Station at Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra, leaving traders counting heavy losses.

The inferno broke out on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, at about 10:00 a.m., razing structures and goods valued at thousands of cedis. The affected premises were mainly used as warehouses for phone accessories, with some also serving as residential spaces and food vending points within the busy commercial enclave.

In the aftermath of the blaze, heavy-duty equipment, including a bulldozer, has been deployed to clear debris and allow for further assessment. The cause of the fire remains unknown, and investigations are ongoing.

On Wednesday morning, the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Hon. Linda Ocloo, visited the scene as part of her ongoing sanitation campaign to assess the extent of the damage and interact with affected traders.

During the visit, she urged traders to cooperate with the Metropolitan Assembly, assuring them that government plans are underway to redevelop the area into a modern market facility.

Meanwhile, several traders have been recounting their losses and appealing to the government for support to help them rebuild their livelihoods.

The Ghana National Fire Service confirmed that five fire tenders, including a water tanker, were deployed to the scene, and firefighters successfully brought the blaze under control, preventing it from spreading to nearby structures.
