New data from the Ghana Health Service (GHS) has revealed that the majority of people living with HIV and AIDS (PLwHAs) in Ghana’s Bono Region are women.
As of September 2024, out of the 11,401 recorded cases in the region, 8,481 were female, while 2,727 were male.
However, all affected individuals are currently receiving treatment, according to Mr. Emmanuel Obeng-Hinneh, the Bono Regional HIV Coordinator.
He shared the figures during a stakeholder meeting in Sunyani, organised by the Ghana AIDS Commission (GAC) in collaboration with the Bono Regional Coordinating Council.
The meeting, the Ghana News Agency reported, aimed to identify gaps in the regional HIV response and develop strategies to improve prevention, treatment, and care.
On viral load (VL) testing, Mr Obeng-Hinneh reported that out of 9,791 eligible individuals, 8,177 samples had been taken, with 6,270 tests conducted.
The region’s VL testing coverage stands at 64%, with an 88% suppression rate.
Mr. Ahmed Ibrahim Bambilla, the Regional Technical Coordinator for the Bono, Bono East, and Ahafo regions, urged stakeholders to continue supporting the Commission’s efforts to combat HIV.
He also reaffirmed GAC’s commitment to assisting NGOs in implementing preventive programmes to curb the spread of the disease.
