A 33-year-old trader accused of stealing a four-day-old baby from Mamprobi Polyclinic has been remanded into custody by the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit Court in Accra.

Latifa Salifu, a mother of two, was charged with one count of child stealing. Her plea was not taken as police investigations continue.

Chief Inspector Opoku Aniagyei, leading the prosecution, told the court the remand was necessary to allow investigators to complete their work.

Defense counsel Hamisu Muhammad requested bail, arguing that Salifu had no means to abscond and would not interfere with the investigation. He added that sureties were available.

Prosecutors opposed bail, saying they suspected the alleged crime could be linked to a wider syndicate. The court sided with the prosecution and ordered Salifu to remain in custody. She is expected to reappear on March 4, 2026.

According to prosecutors, the baby’s mother delivered via caesarean section on Feb. 14 and was later referred to Korle Bu Teaching Hospital. On Feb. 17, a woman allegedly posed as a nurse, inspected the baby, and later returned under the pretext of administering medication before taking the child.
