Asante Kotoko’s Interim Management Committee Chairman, Nana Apinkra Awuah, has sharply criticized the Ghana Football Association (GFA) for its handling of safety concerns following the tragic death of a Kotoko fan.

The incident, which occurred after a Ghana Premier League match, has raised significant alarm regarding security at match venues, prompting both Kotoko and rival club Accra Hearts of Oak to demand urgent reforms in GFA regulations.

Mr. Awuah voiced his frustrations in a meeting with GFA officials, stressing the need for immediate improvements to ensure fan safety. “We know the GFA doesn’t value us, but we will force them to respect us,” Mr. Awuah stated. “We will demonstrate that we are Kotoko and Hearts, and our demands will be met.”

The tragic death of Kotoko supporter Francis Frimpong Pooley, who was stabbed during the club’s match against Nsoatreman in Week 19, led to the suspension of the league as the GFA engaged with all 18 Premier League clubs to discuss security measures.

Mr. Awuah emphasized that Kotoko will resume league play only if adequate safety protocols are implemented.

“We will play the league, but only if the security measures are properly put in place,” Awuah affirmed, signaling the club’s commitment to ensuring the safety of fans and players alike before any further games are held.
