The death toll from Friday’s deadly attack on a bus near Walewale in northern Ghana has risen to seven after four more victims died from their injuries.
The victims, including a Burkinabe national and three Togolese citizens, were among those shot when gunmen stormed the vehicle and opened fire before setting it ablaze.
The bus, registered as GR 7501-21, had departed from the ADT station in Pulukoom, Pusiga District, but broke down near Loagri near a police checkpoint.
The driver had travelled to Tamale in search of a mechanic, leaving the vehicle in the care of the police, his assistant, and the passengers.
Eyewitnesses say armed men arrived and began shooting at passengers and security personnel, forcing them to flee.
The attackers then set fire to the bus, trapping several people inside.
Initially, three people, including a toddler, were found burned to death. Another body was discovered in the charred remains of the vehicle on Saturday, bringing the confirmed death toll to four. One of the injured victims died later that day at Walewale Hospital.
By Sunday morning, two more critically injured victims, who had been transferred to Tamale Teaching Hospital, had also succumbed to their wounds.
Security forces are investigating the incident.
