The Volta River Authority (VRA) claimed top honours at the University of Ghana Corporate Tennis Championship 2025, putting on a commanding display of coordination and skill at the university’s tennis courts.
The tournament, which saw participation from corporate heavyweights like GOIL, Stanbic Bank Ghana, and the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), followed an exciting two-doubles and one-singles format that kept spectators on edge throughout the competition.
The Volta River Authority signalled its intent early in the competition with a commanding start in the doubles division. Nana Kum Sam-Awortwi and Samuel Yaw Akotuah cruised past GCAA’s Pobi Afoakwa and Akwasi Agyei in a 9–4 triumph that set the tone for the day.
Riding on that momentum, Sam-Awortwi joined forces with Daniel Kwame Dzogbetsah for the second doubles, producing another dominant 9–4 win over Maxlon Abuabasa and Agyei, further tightening VRA’s grip on the championship.
The singles encounter saw VRA’s Adom Manasseh Dickson deliver a determined performance against GCAA’s Pobi Afoakwa, though he narrowly lost 2–6 after an entertaining exchange of rallies that drew cheers from spectators.
In the championship final, VRA squared off with GOIL in what proved to be a pulsating clash. The first doubles pair, Samuel Yaw Akotuah and Nana Kum Sam-Awortwi, outclassed GOIL’s Robert Lartey and Enoch Amponsah with a commanding 9–4 win. The momentum carried into the second doubles, where Alex Abbey and Leo-George Borluvie fought hard for GOIL but were edged out 9–5 by the relentless VRA side.
Having secured two straight wins, VRA sealed their triumph without the need for a singles decider, earning a well-deserved title as champions of the 2025 UG Corporate Tennis Championship.
The event, hosted by the University of Ghana Sports and Wellness Directorate in collaboration with RITE Sports Services, enjoyed sponsorship and support from GOIL PLC, Verna Water, Penfield School, and the Ghana Tennis Federation—underscoring its growing reputation in the corporate sports calendar.
