We urge the public to disregard these misleading reports and rely on official university communications for accurate information."

The University of Ghana (UG) has denied claims circulating on social media that it collected over GHS11 million in graduation fees without providing medallions and scroll holders to students.

In a statement issued on Monday, the university’s Public Affairs Directorate described the reports first carried by Joy News and Joy 99.7 FM as “misleading” and “inaccurate.”

UG clarified that a total of 15,776 graduands each paid GHS500 in graduation fees, amounting to GHS7,888,000 not the GHS11 million reported.

The university stated that this fee covered several services, including gown rental, a congregation publication, a graduation medallion, a scroll holder, a university souvenir, water, and administrative costs.

The university acknowledged that while all these items were accounted for, there were procurement delays affecting the distribution of medallions and scroll holders.

A notice had been issued on 10 February 2025 to inform graduands of the delay.

UG assured students that the missing items would be provided in due course.

“It is, therefore, unfortunate for Joy News to put out a sensational story without recourse to readily available facts.
