The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has confirmed the death of six potential recruits following a tragic stampede at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra during the commencement of its 2025/2026 recruitment exercise on Wednesday morning.

In a statement issued by the Department of Public Relations at Burma Camp, GAF expressed deep regret over the incident, describing it as “tragic and deeply unfortunate.”

Preliminary investigations, according to the Armed Forces, revealed that the stampede occurred around 6:20 a.m. after an unexpected surge of applicants breached security protocols and rushed through the gates ahead of the scheduled screening process.

“The unfortunate incident led to the death of six potential recruits and many others injured. The injured are currently receiving emergency medical care at the 37 Military Hospital,” the statement noted.

Medical teams have since been deployed to stabilise the injured, while arrangements are being made to formally notify the families of the deceased.

GAF extended its condolences to the bereaved families and assured the public of transparency in ongoing investigations. “Further updates will be communicated,” the statement added.

The press release was signed by Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin, Acting Director General of Public Relations for the Ghana Navy.

The Ghana Armed Forces began its latest nationwide recruitment exercise this week to fill vacancies across its three branches , the Army, Navy, and Air Force.
