Workers at the Santasi China Mall in Kumasi are counting their losses after a devastating fire completely destroyed the popular shopping center, leaving behind nothing but ashes and debris.
The blaze, which eyewitnesses say started late in the night, is suspected to have been caused by an electrical fault. By the time firefighters arrived, the inferno had already spread rapidly through the building, consuming all items within the mall.
“All our items are burnt totally into ashes. We have lost everything,” one distraught worker told Atinka TV.

The once-bustling mall has now been reduced to rubble, leaving workers and traders in shock and despair. Many have lost their sources of income and personal belongings, uncertain about how they will recover.
The fire has also dealt a significant blow to the local economy, as the mall served as a key commercial hub for the Santasi community and surrounding areas.
Speaking to the media after visiting the scene, the Kumasi Mayor, Hon. Richard Boadi (King Zuba), expressed deep concern over the incident and extended sympathies to the affected traders and workers. He assured that the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) would collaborate with relevant agencies to investigate the cause of the fire and provide possible support to victims.
Meanwhile, the Ashanti Regional Fire Commander, ACFO II Peter Tetteh, used the opportunity to caution the public about fire safety, urging businesses and households to adhere strictly to safety regulations to prevent future disasters.
“This incident is a reminder that fire safety must be taken seriously. Everyone — from shop owners to homeowners — should ensure that electrical systems are regularly checked and fire extinguishers are available,” he advised.
Authorities say investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the fire and assess the extent of the damage.
