A heated confrontation has been reported in Bonkrom in the Ahafo Ano North, involving executives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the Minority Caucus in Parliament.

The Minority group, led by Frank Annor Dompreh, is currently on a five-day tour of cocoa-growing districts in the Ashanti Region to protest the recent reduction in cocoa prices.

Cause of the Clash

The tension arose after NDC executives in the constituency scheduled a separate engagement with cocoa farmers at the same venue where the Minority Caucus was meeting farmers.

The situation escalated, prompting intervention by traditional authorities and the Ghana Police Service, who halted the NDC event due to lack of prior notification.

Accusations and Reactions

Speaking to Atinka News, a leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) among cocoa farmers, Eric Dapaah, accused the Municipal Chief Executive, Akwasi Adusei, of fueling the political tension in the area.

Traditional Authority Steps In

The Chief of Bonkrom, Nana Kwadwo Nsiah, urged political actors to respect local protocols by seeking permission before organizing public engagements.

He cautioned against activities that could heighten political tension and disrupt peace in the community.

Minority Caucus Stance

Despite the incident, Hon. Annor Dompreh maintained that the Minority Caucus remains resolute.

He emphasized that they would not be intimidated and are committed to advocating for the welfare and rights of cocoa farmers.

The incident highlights growing political tensions surrounding cocoa pricing and farmer concerns in Ghana, particularly in key cocoa-producing regions.
