President John Mahama has proposed a partnership between the government and the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) to tackle the challenge of “affordable housing” for teachers.

During a meeting with GNAT at the Jubilee House, Mahama emphasized the need for collaboration between the government and the union group to address issues in the education sector, including teacher welfare, infrastructure development, and policy implementation.

“We wanted to collaborate with funds like the Teachers’ Fund so that the government can also provide counterpart funding and add it to what the teachers have. Then your members can apply for a house,” he stated.

Highlighting the importance of housing solutions for teacher, Mahama underscored a policy directive aimed at integrating school buildings with dedicated housing units for teachers.

“We have passed a policy that every basic school built in the country must include accommodation for teachers.” Mahama said.

He further proposed a dedicated budget allocation to establish a counterpart fund for the Teachers’ Fund which will allow teachers apply for home ownership.

“So if we can make provision in the budget for a fund that will be a counterpart fund to the Teachers’ Fund, then teachers can apply to own their own homes, and so we will go in and build it for them”…”We believe they should be able to retire in dignity. Mahama added.

Additionally, he hinted that Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu would take charge of the initiative and work closely with GNAT to finalize details, with an official announcement expected in January 2026.
