The Ghana National Petroleum Tanker Drivers Union has threatened a nationwide sit-down strike if the Ministry of Roads and Highways fails to urgently address what they describe as “killer” speed ramps on the Brimso to Bonsu Junction stretch of the Accra-Kumasi Highway.

According to the Union, the poorly constructed ramps have caused a series of fatal accidents in recent months, claiming the lives of at least 11 tanker drivers and several other road users this year alone. The latest tragedy, recorded on September 15, 2025, killed both a fuel tanker driver and a commercial bus driver.

For years, motorists have blamed the unusually designed speed ramps on the relatively flat highway for recurring crashes. Several frustrated drivers who spoke to Atinka News expressed anger, warning they may be forced to withdraw their services if authorities fail to take swift action.

Some drivers say the carnage on that section of the road is unbearable. Frank Oppong, a fuel tanker driver, told Atinka News that he has personally witnessed more than 10 deadly accidents on the stretch. Joseph Boadu, a commercial transport driver, recalled that on the very day the ramps were installed, a horrific accident occurred.

“We are tired of complaining because the authorities have done nothing about our plight,” he lamented.

National Chairman of the Tanker Drivers Union, George Nyaunu, who was visibly enraged by the latest crash that claimed the life of one of their members, could not hide his frustration during a media interview after leading a site inspection of the Brimso–Bonsu section of the highway.

He revealed that the union, since the beginning of the year, wrote to the sector minister for a meeting so they could lay before him some of these issues, but they have yet to get a formal response from the minister, who appears adamant about their plights. He stressed that if the government fails to act, the Union will have no choice but to back its members’ planned nationwide strike.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Roads and Highways says the Minister is expected to visit the Brimso-Bonsu section in the coming days to assess the situation firsthand.
