A student has been left unconscious and hospitalised following fresh violence at Salaga Senior High School in the East Gonja Municipality of Ghana’s Savannah Region.
The latest incident occurred on Thursday, 6 February 2025, when students from Salaga marched to the headmaster’s office, demanding the release of three of their peers who had been arrested by police earlier in the week.
The students argued that the arrests were unfair, insisting that members of the rival group involved in an earlier altercation should also be detained.
When the headmaster refused their demands, tensions escalated, and the students began throwing stones in protest.
The disturbance drew the attention of youth from Kpembe, a nearby suburb, who stormed the school and attacked the students.
One student was left unconscious in the assault.
The unrest follows a violent clash on Saturday, 1 February 2025, which left one person seriously injured.
The altercation reportedly began during an entertainment event at the school, involving two day students from Salaga and Kpembe.
The dispute later escalated as their respective groups from the town became involved.
On Tuesday, 4 February 2025, the police arrested 20 students in connection with the violence.
Seventeen of them have since been released on bail and are required to report periodically to the police.
The remaining three were expected to be processed for court.
Officers also retrieved a locally manufactured gun during their investigations.
Despite the latest attack, no further arrests have been made.
However, police have been deployed to the school to maintain order and protect lives and property.
A seven-member committee has been established to investigate the incident. The committee’s findings are expected to provide insights into the causes of the clashes and recommend measures to prevent future occurrences.
