Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has urged Members of Parliament (MPs) not to allow pettiness to overshadow their work ethics in order to avoid failing the public.

According to the Speaker, Ghanaians are observing Parliament with a blend of optimism and scepticism. He noted that while the public remains hopeful, they are also weary of years of unfulfilled promises.

“The people are tired of unfulfilled expectations, but they still want to believe in Parliament,” he emphasised during his opening remarks for the second meeting of the first session of the ninth Parliament.

On the issue of absenteeism, Speaker Bagbin reminded MPs to follow the proper procedures when seeking permission to be absent, as outlined in the Standing Orders.

“You must go through the process with your Leaders before coming to my office,” he stated.

Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga disclosed that several ministers have been scheduled to present bills and policies for the House’s review and approval. These include Minister of Education Haruna Iddrisu, Minister of Transportation Joseph Bukari Nikpe, and Minister of Lands and Natural Resources Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah.

Among the anticipated bills are those from the Ghana Book Development Council, the University for Development Studies, the Scholarship Authority, and the Road Traffic (Amendment) Regulations, which aim to legalise the popular “okada” industry.

In her remarks, Deputy Minority Leader Patricia Appiagyei stressed the need for Parliament to reclaim its oversight authority.

“We must establish and enforce rigorous accountability mechanisms to track statutory funds, presidential travel donations under the Mahama Cares Initiative, and all actions taken in the name of public interest,” she stated.

She further urged the House to stand firm in resisting constitutional violations, the misuse of public funds, and any attack on the dignity of citizens.

Parliament is expected to remain in session until the final week of July before adjourning sine die.
