The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has confirmed the death of six people and several injuries following a stampede at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra during the commencement of the 2025/2026 recruitment exercise.
In a statement issued by the Department of Public Relations at the General Headquarters, Burma Camp, the GAF expressed deep regret over the tragic incident, which occurred early Wednesday morning, before the start of the official screening process.
According to preliminary investigations, the stampede was caused by an unexpected surge of applicants who breached security protocols and rushed through the stadium gates around 6:20 a.m.
“The unfortunate incident led to the death of six potential recruits and many others injured,” the statement said.
The injured persons are currently receiving emergency medical care at the 37 Military Hospital, where medical teams are working to stabilize their condition.
The Ghana Armed Forces assured the public that arrangements are being made to formally notify the families of the deceased and extended its condolences to those affected.
“The Ghana Armed Forces extends its deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and wishes a swift recovery to those injured,” the statement added.
The Armed Forces noted that further updates on the incident would be communicated in due course.
